Art
The art department aims to foster a lifelong interest in creative processes. To develop visual literacy, contextual awareness and communication skills. We facilitate problem-solving, ambition and risk-taking, whilst encouraging resilient and self-reliant learning. Our curriculum develops dexterity and affinity with a wide range of materials and processes alongside knowledge of visual art from the past and present. To inspire and enable progression in creative fields in higher education and the world of work.
Art challenges you to use your brain differently by developing visual literacy, intuition, and problem-solving. It is rewarding to learn techniques and realise your vision and take pride in your achievements. It offers a vital space for self-expression, allowing you to find your unique voice amidst a supportive community.
KS3
At the end of KS3, students will appreciate how drawing, recording and research underpin creative processes. They will have explored, developed and refined skills in a broad range of media and processes, including drawing, painting, printmaking, digital media and 3D making, such as ceramics, plaster and mixed media construction. They will have learnt about key art movements and influential artists. Students will have a solid understanding of creative ideas' development processes and be in a strong position to progress to GCSE.
KS4
At the end of KS4, students will have more fully developed their drawing, recording, making and research skills. They will have learnt how to create extended, independent projects in response to diverse themes that take initial ideas from inception to resolved outcomes. They will have experience of new, more advanced materials and processes, such as oil painting and drypoint etching. Their contextual investigations will enable them to make connections across genres and time frames. Students will have developed proficiency, confidence and independence to be in a strong position to progress to A level.
KS5
At the end of KS5, students will be confident visual communicators with a distinct creative voice and a mastery of skills and processes. They will have embedded transferable skills, such as independent thinking, time management and problem solving. They will have completed an in depth written contextual study. Students will be in a position to progress to higher education. Every year a high proportion of our students embark on further creative courses, such as art foundations or directly onto degree courses.
Curriculum Information
Enrichment Opportunities
The art curriculum at CSG is enriched by a range of opportunities. We regularly run thematic art competitions that are open across all year groups. Students get to represent the school by having their work included in the Camden Biennale. The art is championed through extensive displays throughout the school and our changing foyer exhibition screens. In the summer, the GCSE and A-level exhibitions are big events. We run gallery and location drawing trips to enrich our curriculum. In the sixth form, we offer a residential trip to a foreign city. There is a KS3 art club, which is run by staff or our sixth form ambassadors. The department offers extracurricular life drawing and ceramics as a sixth form enrichment option. We regularly share extracurricular opportunities with students, such as workshops and courses. We give our students a regular bulletin on upcoming and current shows and exhibitions. We support and inform them about pathways to higher education and careers in art and design.
