The CSG Mathematics Department develops confident, independent thinkers who are equipped to tackle unfamiliar problems.
We believe mathematics is most engaging when students explore patterns, make connections and justify their thinking, rather than simply follow methods. Our curriculum builds fluency in core skills alongside reasoning and problem-solving, encouraging curiosity and depth of understanding.
By the end of each key stage, students leave with secure knowledge, the ability to think critically and communicate mathematically, and the confidence to apply their learning in new and challenging contexts.

Enrichment Opportunities
- Participation in the UKMT Maths Challenges (Junior, Intermediate and Senior), giving students the opportunity to engage with rich, problem-solving questions beyond the classroom. Many students progress to follow-on rounds, demonstrating high levels of mathematical thinking.
- Entry into national team competitions such as the UKMT Team Maths Challenge and Náboj, where students represent the school at host venues and collaborate to solve challenging problems under time pressure.
- Involvement in Count on Us, a highly successful competition in which our students have achieved sustained success in recent years. All Year 9 students experience key elements of the competition through in-school tournaments, developing problem-solving strategies and resilience before team selection.
- Participation in Maths Olympiad for Girls, providing selected students with the opportunity to engage in more advanced and demanding mathematical problem-solving.
