Award-winning Poet and Author Visits CSG

On Monday 19 January, we had the honour of welcoming the poet Raymond Antrobus into school for a session with the whole of Year 11 and a poetry workshop with students from Years 7–13. Here are two students’ reflections on his visit:

“On Monday, the creative writers of the lower school and sixth form had the wonderful opportunity to attend a lunchtime poetry workshop hosted by poet Raymond Antrobus.

He had first taken us on a guided prompt in the style of Hannah Lowe’s ‘If You Believe: On Salmon Lane’, pushing us to explore the themes of memory and old loved ones. After swiftly guiding us through the prompt, the floor was then opened to discussion and questions. One beautiful piece of advice that Antrobus had given in response to a student asking about his experience with poetry was that, “You have to see the animal of poetry before you are shown the cage. Find the thing that makes poetry live, rather than the thing that contains it”.

Many thanks to Ms Trench, on behalf of the creative writers, for organising Antrobus’ visit!" - Dorothea Y12

“On Monday, Year 11 students were visited by the award-winning poet Raymond Antrobus, an incredible writer whose work explores sense, belonging and identity. Antrobus explored the meaning of poetry and key factors that can affect it, such as memory, life events and the five senses. He also shared personal experiences which led to the creation of some of his amazing pieces, such as ‘The Perseverance’ (which we study for GCSE English literature), and ‘Happy birthday moon’. During his talk, we practised answering thought-provoking questions and learnt that poetry is not only the words written on a piece of paper, but that the magic of poetry is the thinking process behind them. We were all really delighted and thankful to have Antrobus come in and explore his views on poetry and give a deeper insight into his poems.

And a special shout out to Ms Trench who organised and planned this lovely event – thank you!” – Tahira 11R

Year 7 Docklands Competition

After Year 7's trip to the Docklands, we asked them to produce a creative piece of work at home. We had an overwhelming response and were blown away by the thoughtful work that we received. It was tough to judge but the winners are:

  • Nika 7T – for her amazing Lego sculpture of West India Quay
  • Sabrina 7T – for her super painting of the view from West India Quay
  • Gaby 7T – for her thoughtful poem on the changes in the Docklands area

National Year of Reading

As part of the National Year of Reading, Year 7 and Year 8 students in our reading lessons have been getting creative by designing promotional book posters. Each student chose a book they love and reimagined it as a cinematic-style advert, complete with eye-catching visuals and persuasive taglines. The results have been fantastic, showcasing students’ creativity and their enthusiasm for reading. These posters are now displayed around the school to inspire others to pick up a book, and we are delighted to share a selection of the best designs here.

Improving PE for Muslim Girls

This year the PE department is taking part in a nationwide initiative with the Youth Sports Trust, Muslim Sports Foundation and Nike to improve PE for Muslim girls. As part of this, we have a team of Muslim students running a Multi-Sports club at lunchtime on Tuesdays, and would love to have as many students participate as possible.

In addition, Nike will be donating a number of sports hijabs to us that we can give to our students for free. If you (or your child) would like one, please email Ms Devine at adevine@csg.school. We are unsure how many we will be allocated as yet, but will try to give one to everyone who would like one – all we ask is that it gets used!

Year 11 Art Trip to the Tate Modern

On Thursday 15 January, year 11 Art students went on a trip to the Tate Modern to draw from the permanent collection. The visit was a great opportunity for students to generate ideas for their forthcoming exam unit on the theme of ‘Found’ and we were really impressed by the drawings they made from the artwork.

Here is a selection of the photos and drawings from the day.
