Happy Black History Month

The theme for Black History Month this year is ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’. This theme honours the resilience and strength of the Black community and serves as a call to action for continued empowerment, unity and growth, while celebrating the contributions of Black leaders, activists and pioneers throughout history.

{item_alt_tag}

Around the school in October, students will see portraits of Black leaders, activists and pioneers throughout history and  across many different areas of life. On Monday 6 October, Year 10 and 11 History GCSE students will lead a whole-school assembly where students will learn more about some of these individuals, their experiences and their impact.

Students are also invited to create their own creative piece, celebrating Black History Month.

A Cuppa and a Cheer:
Our Incredible Macmillan Coffee Morning

We are absolutely thrilled to report on the phenomenal success of last Friday’s Macmillan Coffee Morning, an event that truly brought our school community together for a fantastic cause.

A huge, heartfelt thank you must go to Mary Kavanagh for leading the charge. Mary's dedication and enthusiasm ensured the morning was not only a fundraising triumph but also a truly wonderful social occasion filled with delicious treats, great company and a lovely atmosphere.

We also want to give a massive shout-out to our Head Prefect Team. They were an absolute credit to the school and played an indispensable role in making the event such a success. Showing incredible initiative, they dedicated their time the night before to setting up and then worked tirelessly throughout the morning, assisting with sales, managing the music and creating a warm, welcoming ambiance. Their professionalism and hard work were outstanding.

Thanks to the generosity of all our students, parents and staff, we raised an astounding £2,009 for Macmillan Cancer Support! This is a truly remarkable figure that will make a significant difference to people living with cancer.

Thank you once again to everyone who baked, bought, served and supported. Your kindness helps us to live up to our community values and supports a vital charity.

Assembly Speaker – 22 September
Pedro Gil of Studio Gil

Pedro Gil, a former Camden student from the first male sixth-form cohort, is now a passionate and creative architect and founder of his firm, Studio Gil (est. 2006).

In his talk, Pedro emphasised the importance of three ‘A’s’ within his career: The first one being Architecture, and his mission to help people through building communities. The second being ‘Academic’ as he is an Associate Professor at the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL, teaching the narratives around the Global Majority and Latin American dispersion in London. And the third being an ‘Activist’  as In 2021, he was appointed as one of the 15 panel members for the Mayor of London’s Diversity in the Public Realm Commission.

He described his dual Black-Colombian heritage, as well as labelling his lived experience as a first generation immigrant as a ‘superpower’ underpinning his passionate care for the community and the collaboration of projects between various ethnic communities. He is vigorously involved in the innovative process of  crafting buildings, places and communities all around the world. His focus has been to build meaningful spaces, such as social housing schemes, social regeneration, affordable and accessible housing which enable minorities to play an integral part in the planning, building and construction process. He himself and his company always aim to inspire a sense of communal effort and empowerment for those that need it most.

A project of his that stands out is one focusing on sustainability, based in Wood Green. An eco-designed community hall will host kitchens, workshops, and events, and a courtyard building offering classrooms, offices, and a warehouse. Also included are landscaped courtyards with diverse planting to celebrate local culture and community.

An upcoming project of his will be the first public space designed in London for young girls, focusing on safety and inclusion at the forefront of this project by collaborating with teenage girls all over the city, for valuable input and ideas.

Pedro also served as a member of RIBA Architects for Change, and is currently a trustee for Carnaval del Pueblo, a charity that is increasing awareness of Latin American culture in London. Overall, Pedro's passionate and undeniable care and support towards minorities all over the country, coupled with a true attention to every detail, his fervent love of his profession was truly inspiring to hear about.

6th Form Fundraising

For the past 3 years, the Sixth Form Senior Prefect team has been fundraising for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Every day more than 600 seriously ill children and young people are being treated at GOSH, some with incredibly complex and serious conditions. Medical & non-medical staff, are praised by the patients & parents for their dedication, kindness and unfailing support.

A very worthy charity and, as a school working with young people, it seems fitting that we do our best to support GOSH. Please give generously if you can.
