Culture Day

We had a great time on Thursday 19 June celebrating Culture Day! Students truly outdid themselves, bringing in an amazing array of dishes that showcased the diverse culinary traditions from around the world. The aroma alone was enough to get everyone's taste buds tingling, and it was fantastic to see so many different foods shared and enjoyed by all.  Thank you to all our families who provided food for the day!

Beyond the delicious food, students embraced the spirit of the day by dressing up in a spectacular variety of cultural outfits, adding a wonderful visual element to the celebration. Many also enjoyed the beautiful artistry of henna painting, a popular highlight of the day.

The foyer had been transformed with Ms Clark's fantastic display board. Huge thanks also go to our dedicated schoolkeepers, who ensured every visible surface was adorned with flags, creating an incredibly celebratory atmosphere.

Culture Day was a wonderful success, highlighting the rich diversity within our school community and providing a fantastic opportunity for everyone to learn, share, and appreciate different traditions.

Don't miss our update next week when we showcase the culture show acts that took place at lunchtime today as well.

Silver Dofe Expedition to the Peak District

On Thursday 12th of June, 26 intrepid Silver Dofe students set out for our assessed expedition in the hilly Peak District. Having successfully completed our training weekend in the gorgeous South Downs just a few weeks prior, we met at St Pancras International filled with confidence, yet apprehension. Our train ride to Sheffield was filled with snacks, and even revision for the most organised who had brought flashcards along, and we changed trains to arrive in Edale, a quaint village in Hope Valley, in under 3 hours.

Our first night being unassessed, we pitched our tents and enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Old Nags Head, a real pub with deers' heads mounted onto the wall and an excellent sticky toffee pudding. The night was not too cold, and the next morning we packed our tents swiftly, excited to meet our assessors for a briefing, a check of our equipment and a look at our routes- and then we were off!

Our first day of walking was a gruelling 20km, up and down difficult terrain; but it was worth it for a well-deserved lunch with a beautiful view of Mam Tor (which we summited!) (Some teams summited over Kinder Scout). The walk was bucolic, and we enjoyed crossing the fields full of frolicking lambs and climbing over stone stiles - but we especially enjoyed the snacks we had carefully packed. We arrived at the campsite around 6, tired but happy, in time to pitch our tents once again and cook our first dinner. We were used to using the gas stoves and made a delicious sausage and mash, also preparing the next day's lunch. After a very animated evening, our friend helped us wind down with some yoga, and we settled down for the night.

The next day, we were up at the crack of dawn, eating our surprisingly delicious porridge garnished with raisins and nuts, and hit the footpaths for another long day. Our route wound through fields, woods, villages, valleys and across rivers, and we imbibed the beauty of the Peak District as fully as possible. We were caught in the rain very suddenly, but fortunately one person in our group predicted it the minute before the heavens opened and we had time to slither into our waterproofs. We had our lunch in a sheltered crater on a very windy hill, and began walking before we could get rained on again. We made it to our campsite at 4pm, in record time, and enjoyed a long evening, toasting marshmallows and watching the sunset.

Our final day of walking was bittersweet; while we were exhausted, bruised and blistered, the countryside was such a nice break and many of us were sad to leave. We made our way to Hope station, stopping to eat our lunch by a pretty stream in which I dipped my feet, and arrived at the platform ready to go home. Saying goodbye to our assessors was hard - they were so helpful and kind! But we promised we'd see them again on Gold. We got the train back to Sheffield, then Mr Doyland put us onto the train to St Pancras alone, leaving us with a pack of poppadoms and Rijana in charge.

Thank you to Mr Doyland and Joe for making this all happen, and to Lupine who provided such fantastic supervisors! It was an experience I don't think we'll ever forget, and I think I speak for most of us when I say we look forward to doing Gold DofE.

We will present our aims at 6.30 pm on Wednesday 25 of June in the main hall, where parents and teachers are welcome.

Camden Highline: Tracking the Heritage

On Wednesday 18 June, 17 Year 8's attended a workshop run by the Camden Highline. They learnt all about the heritage of their local area, taking part in several activities, including a walking tour of the area and an artistic response to Camden's heritage. We also learnt all about the plans for the Highline and even gave our own suggestions on what should be included in this proposed space in our local area.

The students did fantastically. Well done for all the hard work, especially in the intense heat!

The Great Gatsby

On the evening of Wednesday 18th June, Ms Scott, Ms E-P and Ms Gibson went with 16 English Literature A-Level students to see 'The Great Gatsby' at London's Coliseum, to support the students in their American Literature Comparative and Contextual study (as well as the obvious appeal of the show - and the air-conditioned theatre!)

The show had all the glitz and excesses of the novel, with some excellent songs thrown in. It offered an interesting take on Fitzgerald's novel, and we really enjoyed our outing. Many thanks to Ms Scott, who did all the organising!
