Year 7 Computing

Year 7 are part way through a coding unit where they are using the Turtle library in Python.

Here is a selection of some of the work they created in a 40-minute lesson. They not only learned how to code their own artwork, but they had to recap their angle rules and had to calculate which angles to turn in order to produce their creations.

Year 10 Work Experience – Can You Help?

As part of our Year 10 curriculum, students will be taking part in a work experience placement from Wednesday 17 to Tuesday 22 July.

We are currently looking for placement opportunities and would be incredibly grateful for any support from our school community.

If you may be able to offer a placement – whether in your own workplace or through a personal contact – please get in touch. Placements can provide invaluable experience and insight for our students as they begin thinking about their futures.

If you are able to help, or would like more information, please contact Anna Kranwinkle (akranwinkle@csg.school) by 2 June.

Thank you for your continued support!

Assembly Speaker - 12 May
Reef Ray entrepreneur and CEO of Babr

On Monday, 12 May, we were joined for assembly by ex-student Reef Ray, an entrepreneur revolutionising the world of barbers with his app Barbr which is a booking platform that helps barbers manage their business, grow their clientele, and focus on their craft by handling scheduling, payments, marketing and more. He highlighted that, though he has founded and manages a tech company now worth over £10 million, he knew next to nothing about coding and received no formal training in business. In fact, he got the idea for his business at the age of 16, when he had to wait hours in a barbershop for a simple trim - and over the next few years, despite being in full-time education for A-levels, he began to create and build his app.

In the beginning, Reef funded his venture with all the money he had saved from buying and selling streetwear. In order to juggle A-levels with his business, he eventually decided to take a risk and dropped down to two A levels just focusing on Maths, Economics, and Barbr. Over the following few years, he endured a torrent of adversity, as he was scammed by freelancer after freelancer, until he realised around the age of 19 that he needed to slow down, take a step back, and approach things more methodically. It was around this time that he found someone trustworthy he could build his app with, and managed to secure a £50K loan to get Barbr on its feet. The main takeaway from this trying period was that if you care about something, you shouldn’t just rush into it - if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing well.

COVID-19 was a major setback, as the lockdown went into effect immediately after he secured his loan, meaning the coffers were suddenly empty, as it were - the loan he’d worked so hard for was gone! Now, though, he knew he needed to pause, reflect, and find some other way to get the money. Thankfully, this came in the form of a government loan helping keep small businesses afloat during the pandemic. After this ‘gift from God’, he knew he had to get his head down and focus entirely on launching the app, and so - after six months of tireless work - finally, the app was complete, and Barbr was live.

The next seven months entailed trying to raise more investment, and failing a lot. Over this period, Reef received over 100 rejections from potential investors. After all this hardship, and all these experienced investors giving him reasons as to why his business wasn’t worth investing in, he finally found himself succumbing to fear, and started a business course at university. It didn’t take long, however, for him to realise that, though he was doing what everyone had told him he should’ve been doing the entire time, no investors would take him seriously if he was living a reckless student life in halls, being taught by someone who’d never had a professional business - he needed to drop out. For Barbr. And it worked: soon after, at the age of 20, he raised £250K, and now Barbr has over 75,000 clients in 11 countries, and is processing £750K per month in bookings!

In short, there’s something everyone can take from Reef’s story, no matter what your goals in life are. Self-belief, hope, and resilience despite constant adversity are paramount if you want success. In Reef’s words, you have to be a bit ‘delusional’ to know exactly what you want out of life and go for it at all costs - but, in Reef’s case certainly, with his unrelenting tenacity, the rewards outweighed the risks.
