Flashcards – The Leitner System

This is an excellent method of using flashcards over a sustained period of time and requires serious commitment. However, there can be a great return to your effort as the Leitner system allows you to see clearly that your learning is improving. Begin by finding three boxes that your flashcards can go in. Each box will determine the frequency you test yourself on the flashcards it contains (note: you decide how many boxes and the frequency you look at them). For example:

Place ALL your flashcards in the first box and test yourself. If you get a card right, move it to the second box. If you get it wrong, it remains in the first box.

You test yourself on the card in the first box the following week and the second in two weeks. When you get a card right, move it to the next box. However, if you get it wrong, move it back to the first box. You must be strict about this.

Continue testing yourself according to each box’s frequency.

When you start, all the cards are in the first box. Hopefully, these will move to the later boxes as you use the system, measuring your progress. To help make things as straightforward as possible, here’s the schedule based on the boxes’ labelled frequencies above.

You can see that there is a clear routine from week 6 onwards. The underlying idea is that the better your mastery, the less frequent the practice. However, if it’s important to retain, it will never disappear entirely from your set of practice boxes.

DT and STEM Club Trip to IBM

Year 9 and 10 students visited the IBM Innovation Centre to continue their work with TeenTech, working together to identify the core issues which young people feel should be incorporated in the Young Person’s Charter for Ethical Innovation. This continues our relationship with Maggie Philbin, radio and TV presenter and co founder of TeenTech, who selected our CSG students based on their insightful contributions during our previous workshop.

Keira Y9 - Our trip to IBM was fun and interactive; during our day we were able to experiment with and see cool technologies and innovations that IBM uses, such as the quantum computer model and the Boston Dynamics dog (they also fed us lots of really good food).

Sara Y9 - I really enjoyed the trip to IBM. They were really welcoming and gave us really good food! We were taken on a tour of some of the AI tech that they use there, like a fully projected screen room where it showed us about their partnership with Wimbledon and the fully AI boat that they sailed to America using solar power.

We used the suggestions and the views of young people gathered from around the country to write more concise statements to include in the Ethical Charter. To end the day we presented our ideas to industry experts, other schools and got even more fancy cakes and a free book about the quantum fridge. It was cool! 

The CSG Anonymous Art Auction 2024

Families who were a part of our community between 2017 and 2019 will remember the success of our Anonymous Art Auctions.  We are now launching the Camden School for Girls Anonymous Art Auction 2024 to raise funds to improve our facilities and to ensure we can continue to offer the enriching and broad programme of education that all our pupils need and deserve.

We are inviting artists in the school community and other talented well-wishers to create and donate an artwork in any medium, on an A5 postcard. If this is you, we would love to hear from you, or if you know other creative people who may like to participate, please forward this onto them?

The identity of the artists will be a secret until the auction closes so buyers will base their choice purely on what they like, with the potential that they could snap up a piece by a renowned artist or celebrity. In previous years we have had works from wonderful artists including Cornelia Parker, Ryan Gander, Mark Wallinger, John Keane, Gaby Boyd, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Mona Hatoum and Maggi Hambling. The artworks will be auctioned through an online auction site with the names of contributors listed but not which art work is theirs.

If you think you can help us, please email friends@csg.school with a postal address so we can send you a pack with further details, a blank postcard on which to create your piece and a reply-paid envelope. To save postage costs, if you are local and are able to collect a pack from the school, that would be much appreciated.

Year 9 Trip to Parliament

On Monday 11 March, 9C + 9M went to Parliament as part of their studies in PSHE on our political systems. We had a tour and workshop, and the trip was enjoyed by all! Here are what two students had to say:

Bella 9C - Our visit to Westminster was extremely interesting. Following the path that the monarch takes through the palace on the State Opening of Parliament, we were able to see all the beautiful finery and paintings displayed there, along with a very informative commentary detailing which Kings and Queens the portraits showed and explaining the meanings of the symbols, deities and other people depicted. We were also able to see a few of the MPs’ bills and proposals (and were even allowed to take them to read ourselves!) as well as visiting the chamber in which votes are counted. Walking through the House of Lords (where we did see a few lords), the House of Commons and Westminster Hall was a great experience, and we got to stage our own debates on a topic of our choice at the end.

Alexandra 9M - On the trip, we visited the House of Lords and the House of Commons. We learnt about how new laws are made and what the parliament does to make sure that all voices in society are heard. We had a wonderful tour guide who showed us very interesting places around the Parliament and described what was going on in each room and also how we, as students and citizens, can influence the decisions and laws as they are made. Overall, we had a great time and learnt a lot about how our society is shaped on an everyday basis by the members of Parliament.

Year 9 Geography

Last Friday, Year 9 attended a lecture by Dr Stephanie Levy from the London School of Economics on poverty and poverty reduction. Her inspiring talk complimented the work Year 9 are doing on inequality.

Indigo 9R - "I found it really insightful as the talk widened my knowledge on inequality and poverty. There were very interesting facts and statistics, and overall, the talk was useful and fascinating".

Camden Foodbank 

Camden Foodbank is a free to use local charity supporting adults and children in a food crisis with emergency food parcels and toiletries. Each food and toiletries parcel costs around £40 per person. There are many parts of the borough where people currently live in great deprivation and over the past year there has been an overwhelming demand from local adults and children with nothing to eat. In fact, in April 2023 the Trussell Trust said that in the past year, more than one million children received emergency food parcels from foodbanks. This is the first time the figure has reached over one million children.

Camden School for Girls is making another collection for the wonderful cause, and it will be taking donations from Friday 24 February. 
A box is under the tables in the Sixth Form House foyer and will be in the main school reception from Monday 4 March 2024.

Please bring in any items from the suggested list below. The food bank will be collecting all donations on Thursday 21 March 2024.
